The bottom of a metal-seated gate valve isn’t plain. The conical wedge inserts into an adequately constructed seating cavity in the valve body during valve operation (closure service) to achieve a tight closure. This valve contains a gland and a stuffing box filled with graphite packing to keep the stem from leaking while rotating, allowing it to be maintained or serviced while in place and subjected to the specified pipeline pressure.
